Richard Bona sings "YOU" - Pat Metheny Group "Speaking of Now Live".
Speaking Of Now is the most momentous album in years from the most honored ensemble in contemporary jazz, the Pat Metheny Group. With a new lineup, including a horn player for the first time and two vocalists, "as has happened at a few other junctures in the band's story," says Metheny, "there is this sense of the possibilities feeling totally unlimited. Throughout its 25-year history, the Pat Metheny Group has consistently had the power to reinvent itself, developing an ever-broader musical vision. Speaking of Now reflects substantial changes since the band was last assembled. At the live show here in Los Angeles, he performed a duet with Pat on "Into the Dream", which is something I would have liked to have heard on SON. But my suspiscion is that Vu will get more involved in the creative process on the next recording.
Cuong Vu (born 19 September 1969) is a jazz trumpeter from Vietnam who was a member of the Pat Metheny Group. Born in Saigon on September 19, 1969, Vu immigrated to Seattle with his family when he was six. At 11 he began to play the trumpet. He received a scholarship from the New England Conservatory of Music. After graduating Vu moved to New York City in 1994, and formed the group Ragged Jack with Jamie Saft, Andrew D'Angelo, and Jim Black.
The Pat Metheny Group released the album Offramp in 1982. Offramp marked the first recorded appearance of bassist Steve Rodby in the group (replacing Mark Egan), and also featured Brazilian "guest artist" Naná Vasconcelos. In 1983, a live album titled Travels was released. It won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance in 1984. 1984 brought the release of First Circle a popular album that featured compositions with mixed meters. After another hiatus, the Pat Metheny Group re-emerged in 2002 with the release Speaking of Now, marking another change in direction through the addition of younger musicians. Joining the core players (Metheny, Mays and Rodby), were drummer Antonio Sanchez from Mexico City, trumpeter Cuong Vu from Vietnam and bassist, vocalist, guitarist, and percussionist Richard Bona from Cameroon.
Speaking of Now is an album by the Pat Metheny Group, released in 2002 by Warner Bros. It marks the first appearances of Group members Antonio Sánchez, who replaced Paul Wertico on drums, and t Cuong Vu. A veteran of the avant-garde jazz scene and an admirer of both Pat Metheny and the Group, Vu was approached by the bandleader to join; Metheny had been very impressed with recordings of Vu's trumpet playing and vocal abilities.
Speaking of Now represents a new chapter of the Pat Metheny Group, maintaining the leader’s hold on his own sound while clearly testing the capabilities of his new lineup. For the band’s eleventh studio record, Metheny has added a younger generation of players: Richard Bona, Cuong Vu and Antonio Sanchez – all from vastly different ethnic and musical cultures. The music within is fresh but Metheny treads carefully here while he and collaborators Lyle Mays and Steve Rodby cope with change. Much of this music defines how Pat Metheny sees his own future.
Speaking of Now finds guitarist Metheny leading a retooled Pat Metheny Group; in addition to longtime core members, keyboardist Lyle Mays and bassist Steve Rodby, the Group now includes drummer Antonio Sanchez, trumpeter/vocalist Cuong Vu, and Richard Bona, who's best known as a bassist, but who functions primarily as the Group's st.
