Tom Waits - Mule Variations mp3 album

Sam & Tom catch a blind out on the B and O and gush wildly over one of Waits' true masterpieces, 'Mule Variations'.

A video made to go with the poem "whats he building" by Tom Waits off the album Mule variations.

Mule Variations is the twelfth studio album by American musician Tom Waits, released on April 16, 1999 on the ANTI- label. It was Waits's first studio album since The Black Rider (1993)

Tom Waits grew steadily less prolific after redefining himself as a junkyard noise poet with Swordfishtrombones, but the five-year wait between The Black Rider and 1999's Mule Variations was the longest yet. Given the fact that Waits decided to abandon major labels for the California indie Epitaph, Mule Variations would seem like a golden opportunity to redefine himself and begin a new phase of his career. However, it plays like a revue of highlights from every album he's made since Swordfishtrombones

Tom Waits ‎– Mule Variations. Label: Anti- ‎– 6547-2, Epitaph ‎– 6547-2. Format: CD, Album, Digipak. Piano – Tom Waits (tracks: 5, 11, 13, 15, 16). Producer – Kathleen Brennan, Tom Waits. Producer – Darren Kramer, Holly Ferguson. Producer – Heather Fremling.

Mule Variations is a great album, and that's all there is to it. Sonically, it picks up where Bone Machine left off, but drops some of that album's artifice: the clattering, trebly out- back- of- the- shed sound is still here and the inexplicable presence of Primus persists, but many of these songs find Waits relaxing his krazy karnival barker persona.

Overall, Mule Variations is Waits' most consistent effort, even better song-for-song than Rain Dogs, and the album does a wonderful job of blending the man's two distinctly different personalities. Two different personalities" You read that right. Just let me explain  . The album kicks off with "Big in Japan," which is all Evil Tom. Creepy, distorted vocal effects kick off the song and they are quickly followed by a dirty electric guitar, New Orleans-style horns and a bass part played by Primus mastermind Les Claypool. The lyrics here are tongue-in-cheek.

The discography of the American rock musician Tom Waits spans five decades. It consists of 16 studio albums, 3 live albums, 7 compilation albums, 24 singles and 2 soundtracks. Waits has also released one video album and 11 music videos. Waits's debut release was the 1973 single "Ol' '55", which was the lead single for his debut album Closing Time (1973). He began recording in 1971, but these first sessions would not be released until the beginning of the 1990s

Mule Variations is Waits’ first album of his third musical career phase. It starts his years with Anti, which continue to this day up to his latest release, Real Gone. With Mule Variations, Waits continued to push the boundaries of genre, combining literary themes with jazz and modern sounds. Plus, it just plain kicked ass. Big in Japan, as the first song on the album, was a sure sign that this was not going to be a normal record. First of all, Waits recruits Les Claypool, the king of effed-up music, to play bass  . Tom Waits proves that he can continue to change, adapt, and experiment to create Truly Great music. Waits released seven albums with Asylum and seven with Island. He’s released four so far with Anti.

Be warned there is a japanese bootleg / unofficial CD version of this album which looks almost official but only has one catalogue number on only one side of the spine bearing the mark: AGA-3125, and with a few spelling and formating mistakes in the inner lyric reprinting sheet. It is being sold as a seemingly official version but does not conform to any version on the Discogs database, and thus is essentially a bootleg.

I picked this one up today for 20 € sealed. Thought it was a reissue for sure, but according to the codes in the runouts it clearly is this version.
Ann
Amazing sound quality, very clean sounding and crisp, no surface noise. I ordered from TW website in the USA, order ended up delayed, and when it arrived it turns out its the Netherlands pressing.
Qiahmagha
Can anyone comment on the surface noise on this reissue? The reissue of "Closing Time" is bad.... mastering as well as surface noise, and a lot of it.
Shistus
My side A has a high pitched pop, randomly throughout the side. it's annoying, and like was said before, the edges are pretty rough, they should have cleaned them up better. Sound quality isn't bad but it's not as great as I was expecting. So far, slightly disappointing.
Kegal
I just picked this up the other day... it has a fair bit of surface noise even after a good cleaning on my RCM. It sounds like the mastering is OK but.... anyway, a little better than the latest re-master of "Closing Time" which sounds like someone threw a towel over the recording and the surface noise is unbearable. Stay away from that one for sure. I certainly expected more from these re-masters from T.W. since he and his wife K.B. were supposedly overseeing the process. I most likely will not be buying the remainder of the re-masters due to be released in 2018 unless I read "a lot" of very positive reviews. I am so very disappointed.
Ndav
Been awhile since I've been back to this page... Thanks man!

You might be interested to know that re. Closing Time, Anti have admitted to a manufacturing problem with that reissue, which they have since corrected, and are offering new replacements to people who bought the noisy ones. http://www.anti.com/news/closing-time/

Edit: 25th of March 2018: it's available on Newbury Comics. Buy it from them! Waaaay cheaper. It's a great sounding record. And a looker, too.
greed style
Dang! Guess I was lucky. Maybe it'll return. It did so after it sold out in January.
Swordsong
If only the case, sold out shortly after going online, eBay & here the only options unfortunately
Muniath
Great, quiet, clean-sounding pressing. Nice packaging and beautiful sound quality. Favorite pressing of a favorite album.
Leniga
sounds great. is great. and its pressed in my favorite variant.
The Rollers of Vildar
Anyone know if this is supposed to be pressed by Quality Records Pressings?
generation of new
Just bought the re-master they just did. I heard it is limited to 700 copies so I was considering just leaving it sealed and never looking at it and possibly flipping it down the road. After reading some reviews and how there was a pressing issue, I am concerned. Anyone recommend what I should do? Say screw it and listen and enjoy(know the album well already), open and see condition, or just leave as is. Thanks for any guidance.
Shalinrad
Listen and enjoy it. Take care of it if it sounds good. If not, get a different copy or different pressing, perhaps
Cordann
I just got my copy yesterday, and it has a raised bump on the second side, second song. Be careful and look copies of this pressing over before playing so you avoid stylus damage. I was glad I looked first. The edges of the album were rough & messy with bits of “ribboned” vinyl still needing to be cleaned off.
Vikus
My second copy was perfect - no pressing issue (I figured/hoped that was an anomoly), and the edges were nice and clean as well.
Precious
I can comfirm this records rough/messy edges, but the pressing sounds clean and very nice in generall.
Datrim
New copy looks better overall. Newbury was responsive & shipped the replacement out quickly.
Liarienen
I did, and they wrote back today saying they sent out a replacement ????
Fordredor
N bump for me. Looks like isolated incidents. You should contact Newbury and get a replacement.
Ieslyaenn
Stunningly good remaster and overall packaging. One of the best sounding records I own, but more importantly, one of Waits best records too. 100% recommended.
Browelali
Do you know if it’s a digital transfer or analogue remaster?
Macage
Great release, good quality pressing in gatefold and lovely sound.
post_name
This is the best sounding album I own. Hands down. Waaayyyy better than the original pressing - by a factor of well, a lot. The master is perfection. If I'm on the fence about keeping a piece of high-end audio component, this is my go-to record to assess its quality as every nuance is so easily discernible . (I'm not selling it, so this is no sales pitch.)
