Songs From Northern Britain. After 2000’s Howdy!, an album of quiet triumphs-the off-kilter rhythm of Dumb Dumb Dumb, Cul De Sac ’s otherworldly drift-Teenage Fanclub started taking longer between records, retreating even further from the spotlight. They now seemed more willing to put the band on hold to gather new energy from collaborations and side projects.
Album Songs From Northern Britain (1997). Label Creation Records. Finlay MacDonald, Gerard Love, Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley.
No longer the brash, slightly grungy flavor of the month they were in 1992, Songs From Northern Britain finds Teenage Fanclub's trio of singer/songwriters - Gerard Love, Raymond McGinley, and Norman Blake - addressing adulthood and responsibility with a bright optimism that sets them apart from many of their contemporaries. From the cheeky yet heartfelt title to the gorgeous cover photographs taken by the band with photographer David Milne in the Scottish Highlands, Songs From Northern Britain is ostensibly a concept album about home and love.
But rest assured that 'Songs From Northern Britain' excels in the quality department too. Aside from the aforementioned tracks, there are a couple more truly classic tunes waiting in the wings. Take The Long Way Round' has a bouncing punk riff that propels it onward (a riff that was stolen by Idlewild for 'As If I Hadn't Slept') and once again has a delightful feel of travel and summer coursing through it's lyricism ("Sometimes you look for inspiration, Sometimes you underline destinations").
