A Feather on the Breath of God is an award-winning album of sacred vocal music written in the 12th century by the German abbess Hildegard of Bingen, and recorded by British vocal ensemble Gothic Voices with English soprano Emma Kirkby. It was released by the Hyperion Records label in April 1985.

Hildegard: Columba aspexit. Emma Kirkby (soprano). Hildegard: Ave generosa. Hildegard: O ignis Spiritus Paracliti. Hildegard: O Euchari. Hildegard: O viridissima virga. Hildegard: O presul vere civitas. Gothic Voices chose to perform the hymns and sequences with great simplicity, alternating a single voice with unison voices over drones. Here's a collection of choice gems from one of the greatest creative personalities of the Middle Ages.

Emma Kirkby and Gothic Voices, still the best rendition of Hildegard to my mind, although I preferred the old LP to the rather more clinical CD timbre. 5 people found this helpful.

Emma Kirkby - soprano Gothic Voices Christopher Page – director. Hymns and sequences by the remarkable Abbess Hildegard of Bingen are recorded under the direction of Christopher Page, with Emma Kirby and others. The title is indeed approprate for this sacred vocal music. This was the 1981 disc, from Christopher Page’s pioneering Gothic Voices group and the incomparably pure-voiced Emma Kirkby, that launched interest in the medieval visionary and composer Hildegard von Bingen

Gothic Voices with Emma Kirkby, directed by Christopher Page, A Feather on the Breath of God: Sequences and Hymns by Abbess Hildegard of Bingen - I still remember when I first discovered this album; I was a graduate student and used to enjoy spending my Saturday afternoons exploring a wonderful book/CD store in Georgetown. One day as I was looking at the Christian theology books, I heard what sounded like the voice of an angel: inquiring at the desk I discovered it was soprano Emma Kirkby singing Columba Aspexit, the lead track from this glorious album. Of course, A Feather on the Breath of God went on to wind Gramophone Album of the Year in 1982, and spawned countless other Hildegard of Bingen recordings - but I’ve never hear another one that comes to close to this album for sheer sonic beauty.

Studio album by Gothic Voices. It is an album of early medieval plainchant, the title of which is taken from a passage in Hildegard’s writings that is her own description of herself: Listen: there was once a king sitting on his throne. Around him stood great and wonderfully beautiful columns ornamented with ivory, bearing the banners of the king with great honour. All compositions (sequences and hymns) written by Hildegard of Bingen. Columba aspexit (5:18). Ave, generosa (4:36). Retrieved 11 June 2014.
