Shinki Chen & Friends biography SHINKI CHEN & FRIENDS was a short-time project of Sino-Japanese Shinki Chen, often mentioned as Nippon's Jimi Hendrix and one of the most celebrated guitarists on that island. He was born 1949 in Yokohama City and began to play at the age of fourteen. According to the development of the beat music he joined several Liverpool-styled and blues based bands founded by his friends. He even changed to play drums in between but soon came back to the guitar as his main instrument
Shinki Chen & His Friends was released in 1971 and to my ears stands out as one of the heaviest forgotten psych masterworks! Within the first few seconds of the opening track The Dark Sea Dream you feel like you are in just that, A dark sea dream indeed. Filled with atmospheric backwards piano and backwards guitar that brings to mind a room filled with spirits from the 4th dimension. Chen’s cryptic vocals fed through a leslie speaker set the tone for the rest of the album. Gloomy Reflections lives up to it’s title, Shinki is bringing you DOWN and you can feel it. The solo at the end of the song will give you an idea why he is thought of as the Hendrix of Japan. Once you are soaked in the phase that is It Was Only Yesterday which to me sounds like it wouldn’t be too out of place on Electric Ladyland while we’re on the subject of Hendrix.
Speed, Glue & Shinki (スピード・グルー&シンキ Supiido, guru ando shinki) was a Japanese psychedelic rock power trio formed in 1970 by guitarist Shinki Chen, and record producer Ikuzo Orita. Orita had previously produced an LP featuring Shinki Chen; who was considered the Japanese equivalent of Jimi Hendrix. The self-titled album Shinki Chen featured other notable musicians, including George Yanagi and Masayoshi Kabe.
