Mark Wait: Piano Nashville Symphony Orchestra Kenneth Schermerhorn: Conductor Naxos . 59151 62' 43''. It has come to something when a new CD devoted entirely to Elliott Carters music is issued on the super-budget-priced Naxos label in their American Classics series! But this is a very good record, one which is cleverly chosen with regard to repertoire and which certainly deserves to make new friends for this remarkable composer. Now in his 98th year, he is still composing
Both the First Symphony of 1942 and the Holiday Overture exemplify that early idiom, but are rarely heard. Both the performances are first-rate, and the coupling with the prickly 1965 Piano Concerto is telling, for it reveals how far Carter's music travelled in barely two decades. The concerto is one of his landmark achievements, expertly played and very welcome at a budget price.
Carter’s Symphony No. 1 was written in a deliberately restricted idiom- that is, in an effort to produce that meant something to me as music and yet might, I hoped, be understandable to the general music public I was trying to reach. The first of the three movements has themes that sound Coplandesque, but the organization of phrases into irregularly patterned three-, four-, and five-bar groupings, the disorientation of the lilting waltz figure with off-the-beat accents, and the ductile manipulation of the meter from triple into duple are surely Carter’s own tricks
